{"soloData":[{"name":"Infinite Hotel","year":2024,"description":"Generative audiovisual composition, made in collaboration with <a href='https://www.instagram.com/aylesim/'>Alessandro Miracapillo</a> and <a href='https://www.instagram.com/bbt.gnn/'>Giovanni Abbatepaolo</a>.<br/><br> Puglia, the region of origin of all three artists, has been undergoing a massive process of turistification in recent years. This process is slowly eroding the identity of the region, turning homes, traditions, and places into something closer to a theme park. In the past three years alone, the number of properties converted into B&Bs or tourist accommodation has risen by more than 1000%. In Polignano a Mare, one of the region’s most notorious tourist destinations, the number of Airbnbs has gone from 80 to almost 1,000 in the same period. <br/><br/>We scraped all available data on the conversion of residential properties into tourist accommodation and composed an audio piece that traces and interprets the acceleration of this phenomenon: a crescendo of pulses that becomes increasingly chaotic and unsettling. In sync with the pulses, an image of a bedroom from one of these tourist accommodations is projected into the space. The image is automatically analyzed, perspective-corrected, and mapped to match the architecture of the projection room, making it appear as though the room itself has been turned into a hotel bedroom.<br> The exhibition room is the Terrapieno of the Angevin Castle of Mola di Bari. The mapping was designed to follow the stones of the room, using a self-made projection-mapping tool. An organic interface that explores a self-made archive of found photographic and film material depicting lost or almost-lost traditions in music, dance, language, landscape, rituals. A large part of the material is recovered from 'abandoned archives'. The interface itself is crafted around the ancient ritual of <i>Sfascinatura</i>, which made use of droplets of oil in the water as a method of divination/curse-breaking. By releasing oil droplets in the water, fragments of photographic memory are uncovered, in a way that is purposefully imprecise, organic and surprising. I have devised a dynamic visual system, the visual properties of which are controlled by sliders; each of these sliders can be considered a 'dimension'. Throguh this tool, I manually create visuals for a selection of ~200 publications. Through the use of a <a href='https://www.tensorflow.org/tutorials/generative/cvae'>Convolutional Variational Autoencoder</a>, the 50+ dimensions of the visual system are flattened into a 2dimensional space, in which the visual properties are smoothly interpolated for all the remaining publications.
